Canada wants North American fuel efficiency standard
Canada’s Environment Minister Jim Prentice believes that there should be a single fuel efficiency standard for all countries in North America. He says, “At this point in the United States, it would appear as though they are headed toward a 35 mile a gallon standard by 2020 and that would start to come into effect in the 2011 model year. We’ve essentially been prepared to go in that same direction.” That 35 mpg standard is good enough for Canada if it’s good enough for the United States, right? It makes sense for automakers that sell their products across all of North America, especially to the U.S. domestic manufacturers that build hundreds of thousands of cars in Canada and Mexico each year. It’s not perfect, though, as California is moving to create its own fuel economy standards under the guise of greenhouse gas emissions regulations. “The first thing that has to happen, however, is that the United States has to land with their own domestic policy. It’s by no means clear how this will emerge from Congress over the course of the next year,” Prentice said. Geneva Preview: More information on the 2010 Chevy Spark w/VIDEO
Auto Blog: Chevrolet , Geneva Motor Show Click the Spark for high res images It’s less than a month until the Geneva Motor Show and the unveiling of the 2010 Chevy Spark. For those of you that have been paying attention for the past two years, the Spark is the production version of the Beat concept that debuted at the 2007 New York Auto Show. Compared to the Beat, the Spark has grown two extra doors but otherwise looks very much like the original. The Spark is following the lead of other mini-cars by using a more upright stance and pushing the wheels out to the corners to maximize interior room. Inside, the design of the instrument panel appears to be a simplified evolution of the twin cockpit look that has been appearing on other contemporary Chevrolets, including the Malibu, Traverse and Equinox. Under the hood, buyers in Europe will get a choice of 1.0 or 1.2L four cylinder engines driving the front wheels when the Spark goes on sale early next year. At the Detroit Auto Show, GM announced that the Spark will indeed be sold in North America beginning about a year after its European debut. A video design overview with Dave Lyon is after the jump. New BMW diesels feature incorrect fueling protection system
Auto Blog: Diesel , BMW Click the 335d for a high res gallery One of the risks of owning and operating a diesel vehicle is mis-fueling. Just as putting diesel fuel in the tank of a gas-powered vehicle will cause some very expensive damage, so to will gas in a diesel tank. The former is largely prevented by the use of two different sized nozzles. Diesel nozzles on pumps are larger in diameter than gas nozzles so they don’t physically fit. However, it’s not uncommon for drivers to mistakenly insert a smaller gas nozzle into the diesel fill neck on the vehicle. BMW has devised a mechanism that locks the flap in the filler neck to prevent fuel flow if the smaller nozzle is inserted. Only the larger diesel nozzle will unlock the flap allowing fuel to flow. The new system is now standard on all diesel-equipped BMWs, both in Europe and North America, including the new 335d and X5 xDrive35d. Hopefully, BMW will share this technology with other automakers. Volkswagen adds 7-speed DSG to European CC
Auto Blog: MPG , Volkswagen Over in the UK, drivers buying a new Passat CC now have a new transmission option that gives them an extra 1.2 mpg. The 160 hp 1.8L TSI four cylinder can now be paired with VW’s 7-speed DSG dual clutch gearbox in place of the 6-speed manual. The DSG yields a combined 32.2 mpg (U.S.) compared to the 31.0 mpg (U.S.) with the manual. Similarly, the CO 2 emissions have dropped from 178 g/km to 172 g/km. The 2.0L TDI diesel and gasoline 3.6L V6 are available with the 6-speed DSG, in addition to the manual and conventional automatic transmissions. Here in the U.S., no DSG transmissions are available in the CC, and neither are the diesel or 1.8L engines. The 2.0L TSI is available with a 6-speed manual or automatic while the V6 can only be ordered with the automatic. Audi R10 TDI not done yet; two will run in private hands in Europe
Auto Blog: Diesel , Audi , Racing Following the close of the 2008 racing season, Audi announced that after three years competition in North America and Europe, the groundbreaking R10 TDI would be retired. At the time of the December announcement, the German company declared that the cars would not be made available to private teams. Instead, the company would focus on the all new R15 TDI for the 24 hours of Le Mans and the European DTM program. The company has now changed its plans and has decided to sell two of the R10s to the owner of one of its DTM teams, Dr Colin Kolles. Kolles will campaign the R10s in the Le Mans Series in Europe as well as the round the clock French race. Part of the reason for Audi’s curtailment of its 2009 activities was budgetary. Given that, the technical support that will be provided by Audi engineers to the Kolles team will likely come at Kolles’s expense. Hopefully, someone here in North America will step up and take on at least one R10 for the ALMS as well.
