Using biofuels might be a sin, says Muslim cleric
I had no idea what would pop up when I typed in “ethanol sin” into the search box over at Flickr. Turns out, you get the image above, which was created for the Pope’s visit to the U.S. back in early 2008. It’s a good reminder that the debate over biofuels has donned religious clothing before. There a new twist to the discussion, though, following a recent statement from Sheikh Mohamed Al-Najimi, member of the Saudi Islamic Jurisprudence Academy, who said that using biofuels might be a sin because they go against the Islamic rule forbidding alcohol. This opinion, issued as a personal opinion and not an official fatwa, according to Al Arabiya , would apply to ethanol and methanol, and biodiesel made using methanol. SVO users, you’re off the hook, here. Related stories: Could the Pope make 15 mpg a sin? Can driving greener get you into heaven? FIA president Max Mosley wants electric hybrids banned in favor of mechanical KERS
Filed under: Hybrid , Racing Starting with the 2009 season. Formula One teams are allowed to use kinetic energy recovery systems ( KERS ) to boost performance. Over the course of the 2008 season, most of the teams started testing a few different systems with varying degrees of success. Many of these hybrid systems proved problematic, not to mention expensive, to develop. The Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) met in London this week to consider further cost reduction measures in the wake of Honda’s abandonment of the sport . FIA President Max Mosely decided to weigh in with his own thoughts on the matter in a letter sent to FOTA members. Among those was his opinion on KERS implementation. Mosely expressed his feeling that the electrical systems, which are similar in principal to those used on road-going hybrids, should be banned from F1 in favor of purely mechanical systems. Mosely feels the battery technology available right now, primarily lithium ion, is unsuitable for the demands of F1 racing. Mosely doesn’t explain precisely why he feels this is the case. Instead he says he prefers to see the development of mechanical, electro-mechanical and hydraulic systems. Whether any of this will have an effect, or even prompt teams such as BMW and Ferrari to abandon their development of battery hybrid KERS, is unclear at this point. Mystery GEM based EV spotted being prepared for Detroit show
Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Detroit Auto Show , GEM It’s now less than 24 hours until the first press conferences begin at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and we’ll be there in full force with Sebastian and myself joining a contingent of the Autoblog team at Cobo Hall. However, just like kids waiting to open their Christmas presents, we can’t wait and we’re always snooping around for hints. The latest comes to us courtesy of Kicking Tires and the photo above. Apparently an electric vehicle is being unloaded for the auto show and its based on an existing vehicle already on sale here. Given the type of truck this is clearly not a full size vehicle and a close look at the photo reveals its probable origins. The visible part of the vehicle looks like a GEM NEV. Whether this is an updated GEM or a modified version produced by some other company is unknown. Either way we’ll be searching it out in the darkest corners of Cobo Hall.
