Bridgestone adds "One Team, One Planet" to Safety Scholars video contest
For the last two years, Bridgestone has been running a video production contest for young drivers where they produce a safety oriented 25- or 55-second ad on some aspect of safe driving. For 2009, the Safety Scholars program is back and, in addition to safety, entrants can produce a PSA on “automotive environmentalism.” If you know someone between the ages of 16 and 21 that can sling a video camera and wants a crack at a $5,000 scholarship or a new set of Bridgestone tires, let them know about this opportunity. Videos have to be submitted between May 27 and June 17. A panel of judges will then pick the top 10 videos which will be posted to YouTube, MySpace and Facebook, where people can watch and vote. Fiat Could Help Chrysler With Small Cars
If the proposed alliance between Chrysler and Fiat goes through, the company could produce a total of six new models—ranging in size from small to smaller. The terms of the deal would give the European carmaker a 35 percent stake in Chrysler. In exchange, Fiat’s small car experience could give Chrysler the opportunity to reduce its dependence on larger vehicles. Chrysler suffered a sales decline steeper than any other automaker in January—down 55 percent from January 2008. The decline spanned most of the lineup, but car sales were hit hardest. Two of six future vehicles would be from the smallest ‘A’ segment, two from the subcompact ‘B’ segment, and two from the compact ‘C’ segment. The ‘A’ cars are the Fiat 500 retro 3-door liftback, as well as the 5-door liftback version of the Fiat Panda. The car based on the Panda would probably be badged as a Chrysler or Dodge. In the subcompact category, one of the vehicles could be the Alfa Romeo MiTo—Alfa Romeo is owned by Fiat. The other vehicle is not yet known, but will most likely be placed under the Dodge brand. A brand new vehicle built on Fiat’s ‘C’ platform could be the replacement for the Dodge Caliber. The Caliber is Chrysler’s only compact car and is currently being redesigned for the next model year. Auto Blog: Hybrid , GM , GMC We’ve had numerous opportunities over the last two years to drive various SUVs and pickup trucks equipped with the two-mode hybrid system spawned from GM , Chrysler, Daimler and BMW. Among the claimed advantages of the two-mode hybrid system is the ability to dramatically improve fuel efficiency while still maintaining the functionality one expects of these trucks, including towing. We’ve even had the opportunity to sample the towing capability of the now departed Dodge Durango hybrid. In doing so however, our impressions have been strictly subjective with no opportunity to evaluate fuel efficiency during an extended towing test. Over at Popular Mechanics, Larry Webster had precisely that chance recently when he purchased an old Camaro a couple of hundred miles from his Ann Arbor home. Just as we found with the two-mode Durango, the Yukon behaved pretty much the same with a load hitched up as it does without. Also, just as a non-hybrid consumes more fuel with a weightier load, so does a hybrid. Larry got 14.14 mpg with the Yukon hybrid pulling the car. While not great in and of itself, that’s 20 percent better than a conventional SUV gets under similar conditions. So the Yukon hybrid can tow and be more efficient. Yes, the Honda-supplied footage of their latest pride and joy is now available and allows us to see how the next-gen Insight handles the straights and curves of their test track as it makes pass after pretty pass for the cameras. Detroit 2009: GM to build world’s largest battery lab
Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Hybrid , Chevrolet , GM , Detroit Auto Show Along with GM’s announcement that it will build a battery pack assembly factory in Michigan later this year, CEO Rick Wagoner also announced that a new battery lab will be built in Michigan. At 31,000 sq ft, the lab will be the largest advanced battery testing facility in the world. According to Chevy Volt vehicle line executive Tony Posawatz, the lab will be located at GM’s Warren, MI tech center campus. When the lab is fully operational, the company intends to use it to provide testing capabilities for all advanced battery makers. Posawatz told ABG that any company that develops new cells will be able to bring them to GM for testing. GM will do a full evaluation on cells free of charge to manufacturer and provide all the test data back to the manufacturer. The intent is expand the knowledge base of advanced batteries as much as possible. In this way, GM hopes to help battery makers accelerate their development and therefore benefit from improved performance and reduced costs. Along with the company’s intention to use its in-housed developed battery management systems, this will help GM develop battery technology as a core competency just as internal combustion engines have been for the past century. The Fisker Karma S concept convertible was unveiled this afternoon (after being very veiled earlier) and we like what we see. The new hardtop convertible shares the mustachioed front and four seats with its now-standard brother. More importantly, the same plug-in hybrid Q-Drive powertrain moves both cars, and will go for 50 miles on li-ion battery power. Longer drives can be handled with the help of the 2.0-liter Ecotec direct injection gas engine. Karma claims the cars get 100 miles-per-gallon. As for the production version of the Karma we saw earlier, Fisker Automotive CEO Henrik Fisker announced that 1,300 have been pre-ordered; not bad for a car priced at $87,900 (only $80,400 after US government tax credits). Fisker Automotive hopes to sell 15,000 Karmas a year through its new dealer network. There are 20+ dealers already signed up, and about double that should be on board when the Karma becomes available at the end of the year. But it’s also a little bit more in a lot of little ways. First, if all you care about is mileage, the number you need to know is a combined rating of 50 mpg, based on Toyota’s own internal testing. That bump in MPGs (up from 46 in the current model) comes from a larger and more powerful 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle, four-cylinder engine. That may sound counterintuitive, but Toyota’s press release (pasted after the jump) is prepared for that, and says that the higher torque means lower rpm on the highway. And the highway is where hybrids don’t exactly shine. The new Prius has three driving modes: Eco, EV-Drive and Power. The EV Drive isn’t anything new – if you have a Japanese Prius. A first for the U.S., the Eco mode allows battery-only operation “at low speeds for about a mile, if conditions permit.” This is still the nickel-metal battery pack, after all. The other modes should be fairly obvious, with Eco providing the best mileage and the Power giving the car a “sportier feel.” When you’re not cruising down the road, an optional solar-powered moonroof over the rear seats can keep the hybrid from getting too hot when the car is parked in the sun. The electric fan circulates fresh air into the car before you get in and, if that’s not enough coolness for you, a remote starter can turn on the air conditioning. Toyota says this is the world’s first A/C that can operate on battery alone. How cool is the sun? The design team made the redesigned Prius just a little bit slipperier through the air. By moving the B-pillar back a bit and tweaking things here and there (check out the new rear spoiler), the 2010 Prius has a coefficient of drag (Cd) value to 0.25 (the current model has 0.26).
