Chicago 2009: Ford’s North American Fiesta Movement starts here
Click above for a high-res gallery of the Ford Fiesta What Car?’s Car of the Year , the new Ford Fiesta, was sitting at the Ford booth at the Chicago Auto Show sporting a fresh look. All tricked out to promote the Fiesta Movement , the Fiesta was looking pretty good – and very green. Lime green, that is. The Fiesta Movement is Ford’s plan to give 100 people a chance to drive one of these small cars – for free , if you’re willing to participate in the “secret assignments” – for six months. While we’ve seen the Fiesta, in various guises, for what seems like ages at auto shows, we still need to wait a while until the car actually goes on sale in North America in early 2010. Right now, the Fiesta is selling quite well in Europe (see press release after the jump). Gallery: Chicago 2009: Fiesta Movement 01 Live Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sebastian Blanco / Weblogs, Inc. Toyota increases its iQ with hypermiling stunt
Auto Blog: MPG , Toyota , Green Daily , UK Click above for a gallery of the hypermiling Toyota iQ Toyota already has a fuel efficient vehicle on its hands in the new iQ city car , but the brand’s UK arm set out to prove that the diminutive machine can do much better than its official European rating of about 65 miles per gallon on the combined cycle. The entire hypermiling stunt is being blogged by two drivers that are uploading tons of photos of their progress to both Flickr and Toyota’s UK site, which you can visit here . To achieve the maximum number of miles per tank of gas, the duo has been using various hypermiling techniques while working hard not to be menaces on the roadways by holding up traffic. Sounds like a fine line to walk. To surpass the official mileage rating, the boys needed to make it more than 462 miles on a single tank of fuel. Did they do it? We’re not going to spoil it for you. Detroit 2009: Top ten green cars of the show
Auto Blog: Diesel , EV/Plug-in , Hybrid , Detroit Auto Show After three days of running around Cobo Hall snapping photos, asking questions and banging out posts, it’s time for a review of what we thought were the top green cars of the show. The financial meltdown of the last few months meant that a number of automakers took a pass on this year’s show. For those that did show up, efficiency was a big part of the story. The Dodge Circuit EV pictured above probably has the best chance of being Chrysler’s first production in EV if the company is still doing business as an independant automaker. Unfortunately it didn’t quite make the top ten list. to find out which cars did make the list, click here . Live Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc. Detroit 2009: Dodge Circuit on the stand
Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Dodge , Detroit Auto Show , Green Daily Click above for a high-res gallery of the Dodge Circuit We got the technical details and press pics about the new Dodge Circuit earlier today, but now we’ve had a chance to see the car for ourselves. Of course, if you’ve ever seen a Lotus Europa, you, too have pretty much seen the Circuit. After all, the only thing that Dodge added to the exterior is the crosshair grille and the Tangoreen color – oh, and the badging. The all-electric guts – with A123 battery pack and 200 kW motor – are cool, and if Chrysler wasn’t in so much financial trouble, we’d look forward to driving one of these someday. We recognize a shortcut when we see one, but we’re still glad that when a company wants to draw attention to itself, electric drive is the way to do it. Sure is way cooler than a Rampede . Detroit 2009: Volkswagen Concept BlueSport roadster live
Filed under: Diesel , Volkswagen , Detroit Auto Show Click above for a live gallery of the Volkswagen Concept BlueSport Volkswagen’s Concept BlueSport should go a long way towards making the term “diesel performance” a household name. While it might seem to be an oxymoron to some, seeing it at the Detroit Auto Show , we can tell you that if it reaches production, everyone will be a believer. While officially just a concept for now (and the interior is a dead giveaway this isn’t production-ready), the two-door roadster sports a 2.0-liter turbodiesel four mounted amidships. It puts out 180 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque and pushes just 2,600 pounds via a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Expect a 0-60 of 6.2 seconds and a top speed of 140, all while returning about 35 mpg on the European cycle and upwards of 62 mpg in “Eco” mode. The BlueSport might look a lot like an Audi TT with a Scirocco nose, but unlike its corporate sibling, the mid-engine layout provides a 45:55 front-to-rear weight distribution. It’s also a tidy package at just over 13 feet in length, with a 96-inch wheelbase, a front track of 58.5 inches and a rear track of 60 inches. So it’s about the same size as the TT, but in reverse. In person it seems much smaller than the Audi and reminds us of the Porsche Boxster more than anything, which isn’t a bad thing. Stylist Walter da Silva explained his design inspiration in great detail for the assembled masses, unfortunately he did it in Italian, without subtitles, so we have no idea what he said. We did understand what Volkswagen Chairman Martin Winterkorn said, and that was that VW is officially committed to growth with cars that will continue to offer maximum excitement with minimum consumption, and the BlueSport is a perfect example of that philosophy. We say build it and bring it, ASAP. Hit the jump for all the details in the pres release. Detroit 2009: Lexus HS250h live reveal
Filed under: Hybrid , Lexus , Detroit Auto Show , Green Daily Click above for a gallery of the Lexus HS250h Enough with the renderings and spy photos , let’s move to the big stage. Lexus took the wraps off of the 2010 HS 250h, its first dedicated hybrid – indeed, “the world’s first dedicated luxury hybrid,” as the press release says – this morning in Detroit, just in time for the brand’s 20th anniversary. This is the fourth Lexus hybrid model and is about as close as we’ll ever get to a “Lexus Prius.” The new HS 250h uses a 2.4-liter Atkinson-cycle 187 hp engine with variable valve timing and a exhaust heat recovery system for improved efficiency. All this makes the HS 250h the most fuel-efficient Lexus yet; even the LED headlights save a little bit of power. Lexus officials talked up the sedan’s 0.27 drag coefficient (Cd), made possible with front and rear spoilers (and a rear under spoiler) and many other aerodynamic tweaks. The HS 250h also uses some bio-plastic throughout the interior, something that Lexus says will result in a 20 percent drop in lifecycle CO 2 emissions. Not a concept vehicle, the HS 250h will be in dealerships this summer. Pricing TBA. There’s a short video after the jump. Detroit 2009: Cadillac Converj [w/VIDEO]
Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Hybrid , Cadillac , GM , Detroit Auto Show , Green Daily Click image above for live shots of the Cadillac Converj Concept Cadillac just took the wraps off a new concept based on the Chevy Volt’s “Voltec” drivetrain (that’s a new moniker, by the way). The angular coupe is called the Converj and it is drop-dead gorgeous. With styling that is instantly recognizable as Cadillac, Bob Lutz told us at the press conference that the car was designed to be aesthetically pleasing on its own. It’s just a great shape that holds great promise. Lutz and Co. referred to the Converj as the “CADILLAC OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES” and even if that sounds trite, it could well bring Cadillac back to the top of the luxury car heap, with a solid foundation of SRX and CTS below it. Like the Chevrolet Volt , GM says the Converj will be able to travel up to 40 miles on electricity alone, and it will have a small helper motor to help drivers avoid “range anxiety.” That’s the term for the fear of running out of charge when you’re still miles away from your final destination. As Lutz pointed out, you can’t run down to the gas station for a 5-gallon can of electricity. There’s a lengthy press release after the jump with plenty of stats. All we can say is that we’d love to hear that that the Converj is going into production tomorrow, but the reality of GM’s current financial situation probably means they won’t be able to make any firm commitments for awhile. Hit the jump to view video of the live unveiling. Gallery: Detroit 2009: Cadillac Converj Photos copyright (C)2009 Drew Phillips, Frank Filipponio / Weblogs, Inc.
