Ever seen a few hundred Apteras at once? Here’s your chance

Click above to enlarge One fun thing we discovered in the Aptera Twitter feed today was this photoshopped image of more Aptera 2es than even exist right now (give them a follow; good stuff. And feel free to add AutoblogGreen’s tweets as well). Aptera says it “shows half of all of our pre-orders in one shot.” If you’ve ever wished these things could actually fly, this traffic jam would be a fine time to have that option. Anyway, today’s real news from Aptera can be found in our post from earlier today , we just wanted to share this pic. As for the provenance of the shot, we’re unsure. It’s hosted here , but I can’t find out whose site that is (it can’t be the same John Knoll who worked on the star wars movies, can it?). If you know the details, please let us know. Mahindra trucks – coming to a Saturn dealer near you?

According to John Perez, CEO of Global Vehicles U.S.A. Inc., his company was approached by a senior official at General Motors to see about selling the Indian vehicles in Saturn’s 403 dealerships. Global Vehicles holds the contract to distribute Mahindra ‘s line of diesel-powered pickup trucks here in America. Apparently, the offer was rebuffed, though the possibility remains that Mahindra pickups could be sold at selected Saturn dealerships. Instead of handing over the rights to sell the vehicles complete with Saturn badges, Global Vehicles has reportedly contacted roughly 40 Saturn dealerships about changing over to Mahindra shops. Last month, General Motors announced that it would stop providing Saturn with new products after the 2011 model year. Perez says that 327 dealerships have already signed on to distribute Mahindra’s wares here in the United States. Following the launch of the pickups later this year, the Indian automaker’s line of SUVs and crossovers may be on their way as well. Canada wants North American fuel efficiency standard

Canada’s Environment Minister Jim Prentice believes that there should be a single fuel efficiency standard for all countries in North America. He says, “At this point in the United States, it would appear as though they are headed toward a 35 mile a gallon standard by 2020 and that would start to come into effect in the 2011 model year. We’ve essentially been prepared to go in that same direction.” That 35 mpg standard is good enough for Canada if it’s good enough for the United States, right? It makes sense for automakers that sell their products across all of North America, especially to the U.S. domestic manufacturers that build hundreds of thousands of cars in Canada and Mexico each year. It’s not perfect, though, as California is moving to create its own fuel economy standards under the guise of greenhouse gas emissions regulations. “The first thing that has to happen, however, is that the United States has to land with their own domestic policy. It’s by no means clear how this will emerge from Congress over the course of the next year,” Prentice said. EcoBoost = good news: Ford will re-open Cleveland plant to build cleaner engines

Click above for a gallery of the 2010 Lincoln MKS Ford’s EcoBoost engines are a fairly simple technology and, while they’re certainly not going to achieve 100 mpg, these 3.5-liter V6 powerplants are ready right now and will be available in four 2010 models: the Lincoln MKS, Lincoln MKT, Ford Taurus SHO and Ford Flex. In fact, the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 is so ready to go that Ford has announced it will reopen the Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1 to build it. This plant will be the first Ford manufacturing site in the world to produce EcoBoost engines. This is great news for Cleveland, as the plant has been idle since 2007. It was first opened in 1951 and Ford spent $55 million to give it flexible manufacturing capabilities. Unfortunately, no new jobs will be created as 250 employees from other areas of the plant site will be retrained and used. This is all good news even if you don’t have ties to The Forest City because the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 improves fuel economy by 20 percent while dropping CO 2 emissions by 15 percent. The engine will be standard on the SHO and available an option for the other three models. To dig into the nuts and bolts of the technology, check out this post (and this one ) and Car Blog Greenmore about the reopening of Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1 after the jump. Greenlings: What is cellulosic ethanol and how does it fit with green cars?

Click above for high-res gallery of the ethanol Hummer There is a lot of controversy surrounding biofuels. Various studies have shown that crop-based biofuels contribute to global warming more than they help prevent it , that ethanol is no better than gasoline , and that South East Asian rainforests are suffering for biofuels, to name just three. The most dramatic recent claim was that ethanol was the worst type of renewable energy . Currently, popular fuel crops include sugar cane (in Brazil), sugar beets (Europe), and corn (United States). The good news is that you don’t need to grow crops for the express purpose of making them into ethanol to create the biofuel. You can also use beer byproducts or get help from sea grubs , among many other methods. When you use these non-crop alternative methods, the result is often called cellulosic ethanol. Since ethanol has all sorts of negative connotations, some suggest we rename the fuel. ” Celluline ” is one possibility, but for this post we’ll stick with cellulosic ethanol. Cellulosic ethanol is the main face of so-called second-generation biofuels. It’s called “cellulosic” because it is made from lignocellulose. Lignocellulose, in turn, is made up of lignin and cellulose that is present in the cell walls of woody plants. Follow us past the jump for an expanded primer on cellulosic ethanol and it’s place in green motoring today. Washington 2009: picture fun with the Saturn Flextreme

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Hybrid , Saturn , AutoblogGreen Exclusive , Green Daily , Washington DC Auto Show Click above for high-res image gallery of the Saturn Flextreme One of the guilty pleasures available during the quiet period before the public days of an auto show is taking pictures when no one is around. We’ve seen the Saturn Flextreme (and it’s Opel cousin ) before, but haven’t seen it spinning around on the stand all by itself, just asking for a few shutter clicks. We obliged, of course, and present you with these images. We got a little carried away with the long shutter speeds and liked the trippy effects they created. Oh, to have our fisheye with us at all times. Technical details on this Volt-like plug-in hybrid concept can be found here . This post is all about the pics. Enjoy. Washington 2009: modded Prius is part solar PHEV, part bed, part crazy

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Green Culture , Hybrid , Toyota , AutoblogGreen Exclusive , Green Daily , Washington DC Auto Show We usually use the main picture in a post to give you a straightforward idea of what vehicle or technology the post is about. More unusual images can live in the gallery. For a vehicle we discovered at the Washington Auto Show, though, we needed to use the main picture spot to show off just one of the many highlights that Bob Bruninga has made to his Prius: wood trim on the doors (see it from a distance here and here ). This little homebrew addition is just one of a ridiculous number of modifications made to the Prius Power vehicle we found on display in the Green Car Pavilion The more important mods include: solar panels on the roof and hood, a bigger battery setup (248 volt, 9 amp hour array) to give the solar energy somewhere to go when the car is parked, a retro analog instrument panel to keep track of all the added electronics, and a wood and glass/plastic cylinder thing on the top. No one was around when I stopped by, so I’m not sure what that’s all about but, man, is it cool. In a “huh?” kind of way. Bruninga writes that the solar panels and beefed up battery cost him about $3,000. He knows it won’t get him 100 mpge, but he doesn’t care. He wants to provide power for ham radio field days and explore the possibilities. One more thing: the passenger seat has been replaced with the DIY ” Prius Inn ,” bed for one option. Who knew you could do so much to a Prius? He has plans for more , BTW. Video and pics of running Zap Alias prototype in New Orleans

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Zap , Green Daily Click above for a gallery of the Zap Alias Say what you want about Zap (and we have ), at the very least the company has brought a rolling prototype of the Alias three-wheeled electric vehicle to New Orleans. Zap will be unveiling this vehicle and a new low-speed Shuttle van at the NADA expo there this weekend. How do we know the vehicle can move on its own power? By watching the 30-second video after the jump. One of the official pictures from Zap (above, and there are more in the gallery below) gives the impression that this car is moving at high speeds, but in the video the car is just crawling slowly in a loading dock area. Still, this is more progress we’ve seen on this vehicle than anything else since it was first talked about about 20 months ago. For more details on the Zap Alias, see this post . Thanks to anonymous for the tip! Because we can’t all get an EV, MINI offers a frugal Clubman

Auto Blog: MINI , UK Click on image for a high-resolution gallery of the Mini Clubman ONE Since it will be rather difficult for most people to obtain one of the new MINI EVs , fans of the iconic car who want to use less fuel will have to be content with the most frugal liquid fuel engine option currently available for the Clubman. The powertrain is the same 1.4-liter 95hp engine that can be found across the MINI range, and offers an unleaded alternative for diesel-haters. It’s got the complete array of CO 2 emissions reduction technologies, such as Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Start Stop and Shift Point Display, all of which are standard. Mileage is rated at 52.3 mpg Imp (44 mpg U.S., 5.4 l/100km) and the cost of road tax will be £120 in the UK when the car is placed in VED tax band D next April.
