Toyota Camry Hybrid Review

It is said that as a hybrid the Toyota Camry hybrid does not have the same performance capabilities as the conventional sedan, but I would venture to say that as a moderate recreational driver, this car has all the performance capabilities one would need.

The Toyota Camry Hybrid is a more spacious, luxurious, comfortable version of Toyota’s popular Prius hybrid, with equally impressive fuel economy. The Camry hybrid lacks the aspects of the Prius that some buyers might find off-putting, such as the compact size. The Camry hybrid establishes a perfect balance of fuel economy, ‘green’ living, and a functional family sedan.

The electric qualities of the Toyota Camry hybrid are subtle compared to its counter parts. While driving the Toyota Prius, the driver can tell when the gas engine has shut off and the car’s power is coming from the battery. Likewise, one can also tell when the gas engine has kicked back on, and the car is needing more power than the battery can provide. This is not the case with the Toyota Camry Hybrid. This car offers a smooth, seamless ride. One has to be really paying attention to the engine to determine which source is powering the car.

With the 2008 model’s reduced retail price, and the high gas prices facing our nation, the Toyota Camry Hybrid is a breath of fresh air. As far as I’m concerned, nothing available right now can match the quietness, comfort, and fuel economy of the Toyota Camry hybrid.

Toyota corrects Prius mpg rating to 51 city/48 highway/50 combined

Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2010 Toyota Prius In our Prius info overload post from last week, we highlighted the official (though preliminary) mileage rating for the 2010 model, which Toyota had told us would be 50 mpg city, 49 mpg highway (they’d already revealed the 50 mpg combined number in Detroit). We just got an email from Toyota saying that a “misinterpretation of preliminary data” meant that “the EPA fuel economy numbers we gave you were slightly incorrect.” The combined rating remains at 50 mpg. This is an important number for all the advertisements we’ll be seeing shortly, I’m sure. The other two numbers, though, were incorrect. Today, Toyota PR told us that: While the combined rating of 50 mpg remains unchanged, the city rating went up one mpg and the highway number went down one mpg. Therefore the revised preliminary EPA fuel economy ratings for the new Prius are 51 city/48 highway/50 combined. There you have it. A deal-breaker? Certainly not. A minor (very minor) disappointment? For some, probably. U.S. hybrid price war preview: Insight takes lowest hybrid price crown in UK

Click above for a gallery of the new Honda Insight When the new Honda Insight and third-generation Toyota Prius go on sale in the U.S. later this year, there will be a bit of battle to see if the lower-priced Insight can topple the third-generation Prius from the top hybrid spot. Now that pricing for the Insight has been announced, we can see a preview of that match-up brewing in the UK, and Honda is staking it’s claim for the “most affordable hybrid” title. The Insight will start at £15,490, and go up from there to £18,390. The entry-level Insight SE CVT will cost £2,380 less than its nearest rival, which is, you guessed it, the second-generation Prius T3 CVT. We can vouch that the Insight is capable of 60+ mpg , too. We’ll have to see how many miles we can squeak from the 2010 Prius when we get our chance behind the wheel soon. See more details from Honda after the jump. Japanese market to get Mercedes S400 BlueHybrid in October

Click the S400 for a high res gallery Aside from the United States, the biggest market for hybrid vehicles so far has been Japan. As a result, the Japanese won’t have to wait too long to get their hands on the first series production Mercedes-Benz hybrid. The S400 BlueHybrid launches in Europe this summer and should be available in the U.S. by September . The S400 is expected to arrive at Japanese dealers only a month later. When the hybrid S arrives it is also expected to be the first imported hybrid in Japan and it should qualify for new tax breaks on eco-friendly cars. eBay find of the day: Hymotion Plug-in Prius

Click above for high-res image gallery of the Hymotion Prius The current bid for the plug-in Prius you see above is $21,100, but the pesky reserve price has not yet been met. Considering the $10,000 price tag for the Hymotion plug-in conversion kit that this vehicle sports, someone might be able to get a really good deal on a PHEV, especially considering that this Prius is pretty loaded, with a leather trimmed interior, a navigation system and a backup camera. This 2007 Prius only has 14,800 miles on it and the warranty on the Hymotion pack that lasts for another 35 months (until January 2012). The seller is Green Motors and, according to a sticker on the battery pack , the conversion was done last month by our friends over at Green Gears . The car was in an front end collision, but, to give bidders some piece of mind, Green Motors is offering test drives to anyone who can get out to Berkeley before the auction ends in four days. Thanks to Paul G. for the tip! First Mahindra pickup trucks to be imported from India

One upcoming vehicle that we’re truly looking forward to is the midsize pickup truck from Mahindra , which holds out the promise of 30 mile per gallon fuel efficiency and the ability to haul 1.3 tons in its 7.5-foot truck bed. Those looking to add one of these small trucks to their arsenal of vehicles will be glad to hear that the automaker may be able to move up the delivery date of the first units by a few weeks. Up until now, Global Vehicles, the company that is working to bring the trucks to the U.S. market, has been planning on having the trucks assembled in Ohio from knock-down kits. The plan has recently changed and the first trucks will come directly from India. One unfortunate byproduct of this decision is that Mahindra’s trucks will now be subject to the so-called Chicken Tax, which was introduced back in the ’60s as retaliation for a European tariff on imported chicken from America. Pricing isn’t expected to be affected, meaning that the Mahindra pickup should still cost 10-15 percent less than comparably-sized trucks from Japan. Sales are expected to start in the fourth quarter of this year . Prius proves pricey come repair time

Click above for a gallery of the 2007 Toyota Prius Prius owners, take note. We’ve got good news and bad news to share today regarding the maintenance and upkeep of your prized hybrid hatchback . First the good: Data from Insurance claim company Audatex indicates that the world’s favorite hybrid is proving to be a highly reliable machine. Great, so what’s the bad news? When it does come time to get work done on the Prius, owners can expect a bill that is, on average, about 8.4 percent higher than one for a non-hybrid vehicle. The reason for the surcharge isn’t so much that the hybrid componentry of the Prius is expensive; it’s due more to the fact that there aren’t very many spare parts to be had at modest prices, meaning that replacements must be ordered directly from Toyota. Fortunately, the trend is headed downward as more Prius hybrids end up in scrapyards. Other hybrid models are also proving to be a bit more pricey to repair than their non-hybrid selves. For instance, repair bills for hybrid versions of the Honda Civic and Toyota Camry are 3.8 percent more expensive, on average, than standard Civics or Camrys. The small difference here can be attributed to the few bits of the hybrids that are not shared with their siblings, so this percentage may be more representative of what to expect in the coming years as hybrids continue gaining market share. It’s Friday: Green driving techniques help you live the spirit of Valentine’s day

St. Valentine’s day is tomorrow and, if you are planning to do something special, think about applying your green driving techniques to the quest for love. Before you reach for things to throw at my head, let me make clear that these, um, tips come from the British Environmental Transport Association (ETA). The ETA’s advice to both motorists and those in search of love can be summarized in three points: Keep it smooth . Jackrabbit driving increases fuel consumption – as well as wear and tear – and if you want maximize a nice Valentine’s day dinner, keep it slow. Anticipate . Avoid traffic bottlenecks by anticipating the other people’s movements. For Valentine’s day, consider booking your restaurant date in advance. Shed weight . Removing unnecessary clutter from your car will allow you to burn less fuel. We’ll just pass on the romance side of this without comment. Now, this list is awful short. What else works for romance and driving cleaner? Toyota VP says no Prius Plug-In MPG is available yet

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Hybrid , MPG , Toyota Toyota’s Vice President of communications Irv Miller has published a post on the company blog refuting a recent report that the small fleet of plug-in Priuses is averaging 65 mpg . The small group of converted PHEV Priuses that currently exist in the U.S. are mostly being used for demonstration purposes at auto shows and other events. A few of the cars are being used in university studies including one at University of California-Davis . The current cars all use doubled up nickel metal hydride batteries rather than the lithium ion units that will go into the larger test fleet of 2010 Priuses coming late this year. Miller acknowledges that mileage data is being recorded from the demonstration cars but the results vary too much to be statistically significant. The mileage results of plug-in hybrids are highly dependent on driving cycles and styles. If the driving is kept within the plug-in charge range, the mileage is substantially higher than what can be expected after the charge is depleted. Any meaningful comparisons will require defining some representative test cycles. In the AutoblogGreen Garage: 2009 Lexus GS450h

Auto Blog: Hybrid , Lexus , In The AutoblogGreen Garage Click the Lexus GS450h for a high res gallery Since debuting the Prius just over a decade ago, Toyota has been gradually spreading its hybrid drive technology through its product lineup including the Lexus brand. Later this year, Lexus will be getting its first hybrid-only model in the form of the HS250h but it’s first hybrid sedan was actually the GS450h which went on sale as a 2007 model. As with the LS600h that we tried out a year ago , the GS450h is promoted by Toyota as option that gives performance of a larger engine with the efficiency of a lower displacement. So, unlike the Prius which goes for the big mpg numbers, the Lexus hybrids post more typical results for their segments. As a mid-sized luxury sport sedan, the GS falls into a segment with competitors such as the BMW 5-series, the Mercedes Benz E-Class and the Acura TL . All four of these are very close in overall size, although the Lexus is the only one with a hybrid powertrain option. Based on the nomenclature, Lexus expects the GS450h to have performance similar to the vehicle with a 4.5L V8 with the efficiency of a 3.5L V6. Follow the jump to see if they succeeded.
