Fiat keeps the low-CO2 crown for second year in a row

Last year, Jato Consulting found that Fiat lineup of cars was the lowest CO 2 -producing line in Europe. Fiat bosses must be smiling, because the same has been found for this model year. This places Fiat ahead of all these guys Peugeot (138.1 g/km) Citroën (142.4 g/km) Renault (142.7 g/km) Toyota (144.9 g/km) Ford (147.8 g/km) Opel/Vauxhall (151.1 g/km) Volkswagen (158.8 g/km) BMW (160.6 g/km) Mercedes (185.0 g/km) Fiat Group is also in the pole position for automotive groups (138.4 g/km), ahead of PSA, Renault, Toyota and Hyundai. Carlos Ghosn: We’re testing the EV this year

Renault is betting big on electric cars, or at least that’s the image they’re out peddling everywhere. During a press conference this week in Paris, Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn announced that the French marque will begin testing pure electric cars this year. Specifically, he said that (translated from the French), “the conditions for electric cars to exist have finally been met,” and added: “We’re testing an EV model this year. It’s able to run for 160 km (100 miles), even with the A/C and the radio at full blast.” No further details were given. Is this the model for Renault’s partnership with Better Place ? Is it the model they promised to build for France ? Once pure electric vehicles are available, Renault predicts domestic French demand for them could reach about 400,000 cars in 2016; that’s roughly 20 percent of the market. Renault plans revamp of powertrain lineup to cut CO2

Over the next few years, Renault is planning a complete revamp of its powertrain lineup in an effort to cut CO 2 emissions. The updates will affect both gas and diesel engines, transmissions as well as advancing electric drive systems. Renault wants to be number one when it comes to low and zero emissions vehicles and the downsizing of internal combustion engines will be a big part of that. By adding turbocharging, Renault will replace current 1.2-1.6L gas engines with new 0.9-1.2L three and four cylinder engines ranging from 90-115 hp. This new modular TCe engine family will join the 1.2L TCe that was introduced in the Clio last year and cut CO 2 emissions by 30-40 g/km. New 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0L diesel engines will also improve efficiency, meet new EURO VI emissions standards and cut CO 2 by 20-25 g/km compared to existing units. Starting sometime in the next year, Renault will also replace existing automatic transmissions with new dual-clutch units that are lighter and more efficient. Also high on the list are electric drive systems which Renault calls “an inevitable answer.” Renault is working with alliance partner Nissan and its battery joint venture Automotive Electric Supply Corp (AESC) to try and make affordable, durable electric cars a reality. While an important part of the answer, Renault doesn’t expect EVs to replace all internal combustion vehicles in the foreseeable future. Check out the full release from Renault at the link.
