Geneva 2009: Seat Leon Ecomotive with 99 g/km of CO2 and 62 mpg U.S.

Click above for a high res gallery of the SEAT Leon Ecomotive Concept Amid all of the fanciful green concept cars debuting in Geneva like the Rinspeed iChange and the Magna Steyr Mila EV comes something a little more standard looking: the SEAT Leon Ecomotive concept. As you can see from the large lettering all over the car, this concept seats four while emitting just 99 grams of CO 2 per kilometer. The low emissions come from a 105 PS 1.6-litre TDI common rail engine with a particulate filter paired with automatic stop-start technology. But the “automatic” part of that requires a little bit of work: Among the new features debuting on the Leon is an Auto Start/Stop function. When the car comes to a halt – for instance at a traffic light – and the driver selects neutral and takes his foot off the clutch, the Start/Stop function automatically switches off the engine. As he prepares to move off again and depresses the clutch, the engine is re-started and the car can be driven as normal. The concept also uses “a form of brake energy recovery.” SEAT says that this concept car is the next step in building range-extended electric vehicles. See more details after the jump. The SEAT Leon Ecomotive concept gets a combined fuel economy rating of 74.3 mpg (62 mpg U.S.) on the European cycle. We’ll have live pics from Geneva up soon. Geneva 2009: Ruf Greenster evolves the electric Porsche concept

Click the Ruf Greenster for a high res gallery Last fall, Porsche high performance tuning specialist Ruf announced that it had built a prototype electric sports car called the eRuf which was essentially a lithium ion battery-powered 911. That was just the beginning of the story as the company has brought the Greenster here to Geneva. The Greenster is a targa top 911 in the old style with a chopped speedster type windshield. In the back sits a 270 kW Siemens electric motor with 695 lb-ft of torque. The battery pack system has been improved and is now 30 percent smaller in volume, restoring the front trunk space that was lost on the original. The battery pack now has greater power capacity allowing it to release and absorb power faster, enabling more regenerative braking capacity. The battery can apparently be charged in only one hour from a 400V outlet. The next iteration will switch to a twin motor setup and the company is planning a small series production run in 2010. Rendered speculation: SEAT may get its own variant of BlueSport roadster

Auto Blog: Diesel , Volkswagen , SEAT It looks like there may be at least three different variations of the mid-engine roadster that Volkswagen introduced at the Detroit Auto Show last week. The concept BlueSport is based on a new modular architecture Volkswagen is developing that will allow for multiple configurations. If the car is approved for production, an Audi-badged R4 variant will definitely be part of the program. Rounding things out may be a SEAT-branded model. The group’s Spanish division would likely use the same 180 hp 2.0L diesel as the VW concept. Seat has been competing in the World Touring Car Championship with TDI-powered Leon hatchbacks; a diesel roadster would be a good way to capitalize on that. A Porsche-branded version is unlikely however. The new corporate overlords at VW prefer people to buy a used Porsche as an entry level model rather than offering a less expensive new model. Thanks to Paul for the tip! [Source: PaulTan .org] Rendered speculation: SEAT may get its own variant of BlueSport roadster originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 21 Jan 2009 15:29:00 EST. Seat introduces León Twin Drive Ecomotive hybrid concept

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Volkswagen , European Union , SEAT Click on image for a hi-res gallery of the Seat León Twin Drive prototype SEAT has introduced a new concept, based on the current Seat León (which itself has a lot in common with the Audi A3) that sports an all-new plug-in hybrid powertrain. The model, called the SEAT León Twin Drive Ecomotive, has two driving modes: the car is equipped with a lithium-ion battery mated to a 35 kW (46hp) motor engine and is connected to an internal combustion engine. The all-electric mode has a range of 50 km (30 miles) with a maximum speed of 100 km/h (60 miles). The car was recently shown to the Spanish Minister of Industry who, not long ago, promised a million all-electric or plug-in hybrid cars on Spanish roads in 2012. That goal has been pushed back to 2014. SEAT, which is now the least successful brand in the VW group, hopes to do its part to be a part of this market, so a production version of the SEAT León Twin Drive Ecomotive could be available in 2014. Honda talks more about its electric motorcycle plans

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Honda , On Two Wheels Last month in his end-of-year speech, Honda CEO Takeo Fukui vowed that the Japanese company would release an electric motorcycle in 2010 . It’s been a few weeks and the import of that announcement has begun to sink in. Honda is the world’s largest cycle manufacturer, so an EV wearing the red badge is sure to inspire competition from the other established players. What’s more, as one of the world’s top automakers and the one that’s arguably most concerned with its environmental standing, the electron-powered two-wheeler could be a harbinger of things to come on the four-wheeled side as well. As if our interest weren’t already piqued, Honda has released another press release detailing its past eco-friendly motorcycle endeavors, which include hydrogen fuel cell-powered machinery, hybrids and fully electric concepts. After all of this testing, Honda says its electric motorcycle technology is suitable for both commercial and personal applications. Sounds great… just two more years to wait.
