Geneva 2009: Mitsubishi Global i MiEV prototype
Debuting at the 79th Geneva Motor Show alongside the Mitsubishi i MiEV Sport Air concept was an i MiEV prototype that may have been the most relevant electric car of the show. Although quite similar to the i MiEV design we’ve been showing you for the past couple years, this is the global version of the Japanese automaker’s electric car. As expected, it has a wider stance than the original and the front and rear overhangs have been extended and should offer more protection for passengers as well as any errant (heaven forbid) pedestrians. Also, the steering wheel is on the side you would expect to find it in most parts of the planet, the left. The company calls this i MiEV iteration the precursor to the car that will go on sale in Europe next year where it will carry the Mitsubishi badge as well as that of Peugeot . Although a timetable for American sales hasn’t yet been announced, we expect that it will happen eventually and something very close to this slightly enlarged prototype will one day be available here. Hit the jump for the official Geneva unveiling of the i MiEVs and as well as a bonus video of the global version posing for the camera in a studio and its designer giving some of his thoughts (in Japanese). Geneva 2009: Toyota iQ3 in Astral Black with new 1.33l engine
Click above for a high-res gallery of the Toyota iQ The Toyota iQ has been doing the show (and museum ) circuit for over a year now, but we’ve only seen the car in white. I mean, just look what happens in Google Image Search when you type in “Toyota iQ.” Therefore, as excited as one might be about the new 1.33l Dual VVT-i engine that Toyota has announced for the new iQ3 (iQ cubed) version in Geneva, I’m just glad to see the car in another color. The 1.33 iQ also gets Toyota’s Optimal Drive (aka stop-start) technology, which can reduce fuel consumption up to three percent, if you drive smart. Right now, Toyota is talking about mpg numbers of 49 mpg (U.S.) on the European combined cycle and CO 2 emissions of 113 grams per kilometer for the manual-drive iQ. The first production iQs went on sale in Japan last November . The 1.33-liter iQs will be available in the UK starting in late July. Oh, and you can get it in Pearl White, Astral Black (above) or Deep Amethyst. Fox’s 24 to go carbon neutral
We haven’t ever seen any specific statistics outlining the carbon emissions from car crash and car chase sequences filmed for movies or television, but it can’t be good. In our current environmentally-aware global climate, movie and television studios must realize that their actions will be scrutinized, so it’s not surprising to see a growing number of productions making attempts to offset their carbon emissions. Shortly after hearing that Eric Bana’s new flick Love the Beast would be going carbon neutral , news comes in that Fox will be offsetting the carbon emissions from the popular television show 24 . To lessen the environmental load further, cast and crew members have switched to hybrid shuttle vehicles, trucks used by Fox will use a 20 percent biodiesel blend, motion sensors will turn lights on and off and clean energy credits will be purchased from wind farms in India. Stars like Kiefer Sutherland will record public service announcements urging fans of the show to lessen their own environmental impact. Why 24 ? According to Howard Gordon, executive producer of the show, “We are arguably the worst possible offender, which is why, in a way, it made sense to start with us. If we can do it, anyone can.” [Source: NY Times ] Auto Blog: Carbon Offset , Green Daily Fox’s 24 to go carbon neutral originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 03 Mar 2009 16:55:00 EST. Tesla Roadster on sale in Canada as of… today, deliveries start in Q4 ’09
Click above for a high-res gallery of the Tesla Roadster Canada has not always been the friendliest territory for electric cars, but that’s changing . After the Tesla empire officially expanded to Chicago yesterday, the company has announced it will join the northern rush and is now ready to take orders in Canada. Canadian buyers will have to wait until the fourth quarter of 2009 to actually get their cars, but they should feel free to sign up for the $109,000 electric car whenever they feel like it. Oh, and that’s the U.S. price; the cost for Canadians will be set later this year) The first deliveries will be made out of upcoming Tesla “regional centers” in Seattle and New York, but Canada-based stores are in the works. In the announcement of the Canadian sales, Tesla highlights one big difference between American and Canadian Roadsters: the electricity used to power the vehicles is much more likely to be clean up north: Canada and Norway are the only two countries worldwide where the majority of electricity comes from renewable resources, including run-of-river small hydro, wind, biomass, geothermal and solar energy. An EV recharged from the current Canadian grid, on average, would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 85 percent compared to an equivalent gasoline-powered vehicle. In hydro-dominant British Columbia, Quebec and Manitoba, the reduction would be an impressive 98 percent. Geneva preview: first MCE 5 VCRi engine application on display
About one year ago, we introduced to you the MCE 5 engine types. According to the company, these are really small displacement engines that are able to produce gulps of power. According to the press release found at the Geneva Motor Show site, the MCE 5 engine now has a new name: VCRi. The version that will be on display at the show will be fitted to a standard Peugeot 407 sedan. On this vehicle, and by means of direct injection (GDI), variable compression rate (the engine’s main technology) and other improvements in pistons, combustion chambers and cylinder head, the engine is able to produce 220 hp from just 1.5 liters of displacement. Also interesting is that this engine produces about 158 g/km of CO 2 , for a fuel consumption rate of 6.7 l/100 km (35 mpg). The company announces that next year will see the introduction of an improved version capable of 270hp with CO 2 emissions under the 140 g/km level. Thanks to Dominique for the tip! 24 hours left to vote in the ABG Best of Detroit poll
Auto Blog: Etc. , AutoblogGreen Exclusive We’re having fun watching the results come in for the AutoblogGreen reader poll of the best vehicle from the Detroit Auto Show. We have our own top picks , but this site isn’t just about us. It’s about you, and any friends who you want to email (or Twitter or txt msg or whatever) and tell them to give your favorite car from the show that extra push. To give everyone a fair heads-up, we’ll be closing the poll in 24 hours (at 5 pm EST on Friday), and then we’ll know for sure what the collective wisdom of the group picks for the top spot. Will the Cadillac Converj keep its lead over the new Insight? Earlier, the race was neck and neck (just two votes), but the Converj is now up by about 40. I’m sure there’s some Insight fan with 40 friends out there, isn’t there? Or maybe a Prius fanboy army that can get 150 fans to move that icon to the top of the list? In any case, we’re counting on you and your internet circle of friends to make this a contest. Detroit 2009: Top ten green cars of the show
Auto Blog: Diesel , EV/Plug-in , Hybrid , Detroit Auto Show After three days of running around Cobo Hall snapping photos, asking questions and banging out posts, it’s time for a review of what we thought were the top green cars of the show. The financial meltdown of the last few months meant that a number of automakers took a pass on this year’s show. For those that did show up, efficiency was a big part of the story. The Dodge Circuit EV pictured above probably has the best chance of being Chrysler’s first production in EV if the company is still doing business as an independant automaker. Unfortunately it didn’t quite make the top ten list. to find out which cars did make the list, click here . Live Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc. BREAKING: Detroit 2009 – GM building Volt battery packs with LG Chem cells
Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Hybrid , GM , Detroit Auto Show After showing off its latest cars and concepts yesterday at the Detroit Auto Show , General Motors reserved its second press conference today for battery news. As has been rumored for months, South Korea’s LG Chem has been selected to supply the lithium-ion cells that will power the Chevy Volt. However, LG Chem and its U.S. subsidiary will not be supplying full packs to GM. Instead, GM has decided to keep the pack production in-house along with the battery management systems and all the power electronics. The automaker will be building a pack assembly facility here in Michigan, with LG Chem only supplying the cells. GM is currently working on finalizing the site selection and working with local and state officials on the approvals. The site of the factory is expected to be announced soon with site preparation starting early this year. Tooling of the factory should be completed by early 2010 with production starting soon afterward. GM also announced a new partnership with the University of Michigan to create the Advanced Battery Coalition for Drivetrains (ABCD). ABCD will focus on researching batteries and integration issues with a specific focus on vehicle applications. Press release after the jump.
