AMG: Direct injection and Stop&Start in 2010
Auto Blog: Mercedes Benz , Germany As you may recall, Mercedes’ performance division, AMG, recently put up the white flag on the speed wars . This basically means that they are now looking for more efficiency rather than more brute horsepower. Their previous focus on power came at the expense of fuel economy, natürlich . How will the efficiency shift play out? AMG is welcoming direct injection and Stop & Start (micro hybrid) systems, which will be installed in all 2010 models, two years earlier than expected . The new piezo-electric injectors are the same as the ones fitted to the BlueEfficiency models. Thanks to these technologies and weight reduction, AMG expects to reduce fuel consumption by 30 percent without losing any character at all. Diesels and hybrids will also become part of the offering soon. Because we can’t all get an EV, MINI offers a frugal Clubman
Auto Blog: MINI , UK Click on image for a high-resolution gallery of the Mini Clubman ONE Since it will be rather difficult for most people to obtain one of the new MINI EVs , fans of the iconic car who want to use less fuel will have to be content with the most frugal liquid fuel engine option currently available for the Clubman. The powertrain is the same 1.4-liter 95hp engine that can be found across the MINI range, and offers an unleaded alternative for diesel-haters. It’s got the complete array of CO 2 emissions reduction technologies, such as Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Start Stop and Shift Point Display, all of which are standard. Mileage is rated at 52.3 mpg Imp (44 mpg U.S., 5.4 l/100km) and the cost of road tax will be £120 in the UK when the car is placed in VED tax band D next April. Rahm Emanuel – Obama’s fighter for hybrid cars in the White House
Auto Blog: Hybrid , Legislation and Policy , USA Photo by Dru Bloomfield – At Home in Scottsdale . Licensed under Creative Commons license 2.0. Who’s going to be pushing the hardest for cleaner cars in the U.S. – hybrids, PHEVs and CNG vehicles , specifically – in the coming years? According to HybridCars , it will not be Plug In America or AutoblogGreen readers; instead, it could be President Obama’s White House chief of staff: Rahm Emanuel. HybridCars suggesets that Emanuel, “a devout Jew,” might use his personal desire to see America extract itself from Middle East oil as a reason to push for more fuel efficient vehicles. Emanuel’s legislation history includes introducing the American Hybrid Tax Credit Act in 2005 and sponsoring legislation that would have created an NGV mandate for automakers . Emanuel also wrote a book in 2006 called The Plan that includes a chapter on getting off of gas that was very bullish on plug-in hybrids – and ways that the government could support purchases of these vehicles. There’s a lengthy excerpt from that chapter over at HybridCars . Now that he’s as close as anyone to the man in charge, there’s a good chance Emanuel’s words are a heard in a different way than before.
