Tazzari Zero to be distributed in North America by Verdek

Click above for a high-res gallery We’ve only been watching the development of the Tazzari Zero electric city car since last October, but the fast-moving company has not only announced a December 2009 launch date but has also named a North American distributor. Verdek , headed by former president and CEO of the North American tire division of Pirelli, Guy Mannino, has announced that they will be distributing the sporty Italian electric in Canada, the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean Islands. While the Zero is capable of reaching 56 mph, it will be sold as a NEV in the U.S. That means it will be limited electronically to the speeds allowed by your state (most commonly, 25 mph). They say they are considering putting the car through the NHTSA crash-testing requirements which would allow drivers to experience its full potential , though it could be some time before that decision is made. You can follow developments as they occur by joining their Facebook group or watch this space as we wait for the unveiling of the Zero in the metal. Verdek is also a promoter of the Coulomb charging stations (sometimes called Smartlets ) and carries the ZAP! lineup. Geneva 2009: Peugeot 908 HY, hybrid LMP1 racer

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Peugeot 908 HY Prominently featured in the center of Peugeot’s stand at the Geneva Motor Show this week was the 908 HY. This experimental prototype was first unveiled last September as a test-bed for the next generation of Peugeot’s Le Mans racers. Based on the extremely fast 908 HDi LMP1 car, this one adds a hybrid electric drive to the mix. Peugeot hasn’t committed to a race debut for the car yet, but 2010 seems a likely time frame. On the other hand, if the new Audi R15 TDI proves to be a big jump ahead of the 908, the hybrid could appear sooner. Tazzari releases more details on Zero electric city car

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Europe/EU Click above for a gallery of Zero images Back in the ’50s, the Fiat 500 and the Piagio Vespa revolutionized motorized transport in Italy. The Tazzari Zero could be the next step, putting electric power in a stylish and affordable package available to the masses. We’ve been following the development of the Zero for a while now , but the Italian manufacturing concern, based near the Imola race circuit, has now released preliminary specifications on the compact city car. The zippy little two-door measures less than three meters (113.5″) long and weighs less than 1,200 lbs; the Li-Ion Fe batteries account for 312 of those lbs. The vehicles, designed for urban transportation, can go 88 miles on a full charge that takes 9 hours to complete, but a fifty-minute lunch break will yield an 80 percent charge. Performance enthusiasts looking for a 0-60 time will be disappointed: the Zero doesn’t have one. Top speed is only 56 mph, and the Zero will take a hair under five seconds to reach 31. That’s significantly slower than a Vespa, so highway driving will be out of the question (For long-distance travel, Italy is developing a new high-speed train network). Tazzari hopes the Zero, which goes on sale in Europe and the Caribbean later this year with a 20,000-Euro price tag, will prove a popular mode of eco-friendly and affordable transportation around the world. Tazarri Zero gets new website, car configurator

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Lightweight , Europe/EU , UK After being introduced to the public a mere 16 weeks ago, the folks behind the Tazzari Zero are starting to get more serious about their racy two-seater and have given it a proper website . As well as being able to watch a trailer and play with the “car configurator,” you can also find news and Car Blog Greena bit of the history behind the company and car. The configurator’s a little lackluster but gives you a general idea how the Zero might look in a few different colors. The site also has a newsletter sign up for interested dealers. Speaking of dealers, it seems TYC Track has picked up the British Distribution of the Italian eco-sportster. No word on when it will actually be available, but it is supposed to begin production this year in Imola, Italy. Hit the jump for video of the pre-production Zero being driven about.
