Elon Musk reportedly sets trap for loose lipped employees
The breathless style of writing at which Valleywag has made a name for itself isn’t the sort of thing we often link to, but we’ll make an exception today. According to the Gawker team , Tesla CEO Elon Musk is not making any friends in his own company; in fact, Valleywag claims that Musk recently tried to pinpoint people on his team who may be leaking confidential information to the media. The tactic? Sending each employee a slightly altered version of an email about stopping the leaks and then checking to see which version made it to the media. It reportedly backfired in a pretty big way. Valleywag reports that Musk did not let his own executives know of this plan to smoke out the leaker. One of them unknowingly forwarded his version of the email within the company, which made it clear to the rest of Tesla’s workforce that they were being set up. We contacted Tesla about this story, but got a simple “No Comment.” That’s fine for us, but it might be a long, long month before the Model S unveiling on the 26th . Follow the source link to Car Blog Greena version of the email, presumably one of many, that Musk sent to his employees. Thanks to Yanquetino for the tip! Tesla Roadster on sale in Canada as of… today, deliveries start in Q4 ’09
Click above for a high-res gallery of the Tesla Roadster Canada has not always been the friendliest territory for electric cars, but that’s changing . After the Tesla empire officially expanded to Chicago yesterday, the company has announced it will join the northern rush and is now ready to take orders in Canada. Canadian buyers will have to wait until the fourth quarter of 2009 to actually get their cars, but they should feel free to sign up for the $109,000 electric car whenever they feel like it. Oh, and that’s the U.S. price; the cost for Canadians will be set later this year) The first deliveries will be made out of upcoming Tesla “regional centers” in Seattle and New York, but Canada-based stores are in the works. In the announcement of the Canadian sales, Tesla highlights one big difference between American and Canadian Roadsters: the electricity used to power the vehicles is much more likely to be clean up north: Canada and Norway are the only two countries worldwide where the majority of electricity comes from renewable resources, including run-of-river small hydro, wind, biomass, geothermal and solar energy. An EV recharged from the current Canadian grid, on average, would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 85 percent compared to an equivalent gasoline-powered vehicle. In hydro-dominant British Columbia, Quebec and Manitoba, the reduction would be an impressive 98 percent. Geneva 2009: Brabus smart ed revealed
Click above for a gallery of the Brabus smart ed The Brabus Tesla Roadster is no longer the only electric car that the tuning company will make for you. In Geneva today, Daimler unveiled the Brabus smart ed. The tricked out door frame and interior are just two of the ways that Brabus has made this lime green smart ed their own. The car also offers LED daytime driving lights and a white soft top. Daimler makes a point of saying that the Brabus smart ed’s “fine natural materials demonstrate harmony with the environment” but doesn’t exactly explain how that works. There is harmony between the ed logo on the outside and on the headrests , though. If you like the idea of Brabus tuning up a smart fortwo, but want a gasoline engine to go in it, Daimler’s got you covered . Ask AutoblogGreen: What regulations govern electric vehicles?
Here at AutoblogGreen we get plenty of questions from readers about all kinds of topics related to alternative transportation. Reader James asks: “Reportedly, there is a federal law which limits the size/speed of autos on all roads. This, in effect restricts electric alternative vehicles that must exceed 35 mph speed. I haven’t got the whole story correct, I’m sure. That’s why I’m trying to get the straight story. Specifically, determine whether such a Federal law exists, and if so, what exactly does it restrict?” So what exactly is the story? In the electric “car” ranks there are basically three classes of vehicle. There are three wheelers like the Zap Xebra or Aptera which are classed as motorcycles and therefore not subject to crash safety standards. These vehicles are allowed to operate at any speed. Then there are full-speed vehicles which have at least four wheels, are capable of exceeding 25 mph and have a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 8,500 lbs. These vehicles are subject to all of the same safety regulations as any other car on the road today. That means the bumpers must withstand 2.5 mph impacts, there must be seatbelts and airbags and all sorts of other rules regarding lighting and impact safety are enforced. The only series production EV currently available in the U.S. today that meets this classification is the Tesla Roadster . Then there are low-speed vehicles . Eric Bana offsets carbon emissions of new film, "Love the Beast"
Regardless of your view on global climate change, you must admit that the issue of carbon emissions has become a hot topic over these last few years, and automobiles have taken the brunt of the criticism. Celebrities often seem to be leading the low-emissions charge, or they at least like to appear that way by driving fuel sippers like the Toyota Prius or sometimes the fully electric Tesla Roadster . Not this time. Eric Bana, star of box office productions like Hulk and Troy , is apparently quite the gearhead, and he’s also concerned enough with the environment to offset all the carbon emissions of his upcoming new flick, Love The Beast . The title character of the new movie is an Australian Ford Falcon coupe from 1973 – hardly a bastion of clean motoring – that was modified to take part in the Targa Tasmanian Rally. Bana’s production company hired a team of specialists to calculate the carbon emissions spent by the crew in the making of the film, and the appropriate number of trees will be planted to equal it all out. New Teaser of Tesla Model S surfaces, our friend Jason orders two!
Over at Jason Calacanis’ blog, a new teaser shot of the Tesla Model S has surfaced that shows a bit more detail of the car’s greenhouse profile. According Jason, the photo was emailed to buyers of the Signature 100 cars of which he is one. We got our first glimpse of the new car last week but this one shows more. Most of the car appears to be hidden in this image but there are details if you know how to look. A visit to the curves adjustment in Photoshop reveals the same fender trim seen on the earlier shot as well as the wheels. In the adjusted version, the door handles and side glass profile are also visible as is the glass roof. We don’t know at this point if the glass roof will be part of the production model although it could be problematic for an EV. The extra thermal load would have the air conditioning working harder cutting into the range. You can check out the enhanced photo after the jump. Jason is so happy with his Roadster that he has decided to order two Model S Signature Series sedans. Tesla has opened the reservation list for the Signature Series. Right now, only early adopters of the Roadster can get on the list for a $40,000 refundable deposit. Following the March 26 reveal, anyone will be able to order one for a $10,000 deposit. If you already own a Roadster, you’ll get $10,000 off the price of a Model S. Don’t forget the enhanced version of the Model S teaser after the jump. Shelby Supercars makes some incredible claims about its upcoming EV
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in In mid-2008, Shelby Supercars announced that it would follow up its 254 mph Ultimate Aero with an all-electric version. Unfortunately the company was sparse on details, with little more than the claim that it would have a pair of 500 hp electric motors. A new press release today yields a few more details, but unlike the initial specs these are far less believable. The 150-200 mile range might be plausible were it not for that 1,000 hp output. That’s three times the output of a Tesla Roadster. From there things really go off the rails. The car will reportedly use some kind of lithium ion battery pack with some sort of indeterminate nanotechnology. The company claims it will be rechargeable in only ten minutes. If SSC were using Altairnano batteries, that claim might possible. However, they claim it can be done in 10 minutes from a 110V outlet. For the sake of argument, with a 50 kWh pack (a conservative estimate to get anywhere near 200 miles) a 10 minute charge with only 110V would require over 2,700 A of current, something you will not get from any existing 110V outlet. Hopefully next time Shelby opens up, they will provide some real details that are actually credible. Thanks to Amy for the tip! London mayor drives the Tesla Roadster, wants something else
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Tesla Motors , Green Daily , UK Click above to enlarge Sure, the big news in the Tesla world are the somewhat sneaky price increases that people on the buyers’ list now have to deal with. But, if you’re more of a fanboy who just wants to hear the good news, then you’ll like this story about London Mayor Boris Johnson. During a preview of the IQ 2 Green Festival , Johnson went for a test drive in a Roadster and it just enhanced his desire for an electric car, just not the Roadster. Johnson might not like the London congestion charge , but he does like EVs and told Tesla’s UK sales and marketing director that, “What I really want is a people carrier.” Cochrane replied, “You’ll get one.” Possibly, but not from Tesla Motors any time soon. If you’re jealous of Johnson’s drive and live near London, listen up. The organizers of the Intelligence Squared Green Festival are raffling off four chances to test drive the Tesla Roadster. You can find the details in the press release after the jump. Extreme Makeover family gets free 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid
Auto Blog: Etc. , Hybrid , Ford , USA If you were watching “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” yesterday (and who wasn’t?) then you were witness to some extreme generosity on the part of the Ford Motor Company who gave the featured family a brand new 2010 Fusion hybrid to go with their freshly refurbished house. The automaker’s magnanimity didn’t end there either. Unlike the years supply of gasoline your father’s Ford Company might have given to go along with the car, the Ford of today chose instead to throw in a set of solar panels. Of course, the company doesn’t make a vehicle that runs on electricity yet but, hey, it’s the thought that counts. The gesture makes the Drumm family one of the first in America to drive the Fusion hybrid as it will only arrive in showrooms in the Spring. Its EPA-rated 41 mpg in the city ( we got 43.1! ) is probably more than twice that of the hand-me-down van they had been driving. Such a good deed deserves a press release and we have that for you after the break. Prospective Tesla owners not happy about price increases on locked in cars
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Tesla Motors Click above for high-res image gallery of Jason’s Tesla Roadster Along with the news that Tesla Motors is offering an array of new high-margin optional extras for the Roadster comes news that the company is looking at other means of increasing revenues. All of this comes with an eye toward reaching a cash flow positive position by the middle of 2009 as promised by CEO Elon Musk . Unfortunately, it appears that some of that profit is coming on the backs of early adopters. When you put down a deposit on a car two years before it hits the streets, it shouldn’t come as surprise that the specs would change somewhat before it arrives. But when the actual build time comes close, customers have to lock in the options they want on the car such as colors, interior finish, etc. about three months ahead to give the company time to line up special parts. It turns out that customers who already locked in orders recently have been unlocked and asked to reselect options. Some of the previously selected options are now higher priced and other previously standard features are now extra cost options. Among those are the wheels that we’ve seen on every Roadster up until now. They have been replaced by a new, presumably less expensive design with the original design now fetching an extra $3,000. Audio system upgrades are now also more expensive. Perhaps most annoying is that the cable that allows the car to be plugged into the high power home charger for a three-hour charge has become a pricey add-on. Until now, these have been included in the cars. Drivers who want three-hour charges going forward will have to fork over an extra $3,000 to get this hefty extension cord.
