Toyota offering rebates on 2009 Prius

Auto Blog: Hybrid , Toyota , USA Despite the horribly irritating ad campaign, it turns out that Toyota was not quite “Saved by Zero.” In fact, the automaker actually lost market share during the period that it was offering zero-percent financing deals on many of its most popular models, leading many dealers to call for good old-fashioned cash incentives instead. Toyota’s been listening and has announced a series of cash-back bonuses, including on the midsize Camry, compact Corolla and even the 2009 Prius hybrid. Of course, big trucks get in on the rebate game, garnering rebates of up to $4,000 depending on the model year, but the Prius’ $750 incentive may be enough to get a few consumers off the fence ahead of the redesigned 2010 model . With stiff competition on the way from the Honda Insight as well as the Ford Fusion Hybrid , Toyota will likely need to work harder that it has in the past to move its hybrid hatch. Open-Source car set to debut at Geneva Motor Show

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Geneva Motor Show , Green Daily Click above for a gallery of the EDAG Light Car – Open Source Exactly what is an open-source car? According to German design firm EDAG, it’s a concept car for the future that any firm is able to refine as it sees fit, and the first version of the Light Car – Open Source is set to debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March. The basic bones of the concept are suitably futuristic, with a structure made from basalt fiber, which is like carbon fiber but cheaper and fully recyclable, and organic LEDs under the glass-like outer skin that can be shaped any way the user pleases. Those LEDs make up the interior cockpit, headlamps and the entire rear hatch, which can be used as a billboard to communicate with other motorists. What would power the car of the future? Electricity, of course, and the Light Car uses a set of hub-mounted electric motors and a lithium ion battery pack that’s said to allow for a range of 93 miles (150 kilometers). We’ll keep our eyes peeled for future iterations of this open-source project and will see if we can’t get some live shots of the concept from Geneva. Bee Four revives BRM brand, reveals in-wheel motor source

Auto Blog: Emerging Technologies , EV/Plug-in , UK , Racing It’s been announced that the electric race car we were telling you about from Bee Automobiles Ltd will now contend for the British Speed Hill Climb Championship in 2010 as the BRM Bee Four ERV. This revives the BRM (British Racing Motors) brand that was born 60 years ago and has a rich and proud history . This also delays the original plan by a year, but should give them the necessary time to introduce a car that is fully tested and ready to win. There is hope that we’ll see it before then as it is rumored that it may make some cameos at events this year. While we had suspected they were using the PML Flightlink in-wheel motors to achieve their claimed 700 bhp, we were somewhat glad to learn differently. PML Flightlink went into administration in November and the future of their Hi-Pa Drive[TM] motors is unclear. Bee Automotive will be making use of in-wheel motor technology that was developed at Oxford University . They are said to be 97 percent efficient, have high torque and low weight. We look forward to seeing them in action. Hit the jump for all the details in the press release.
