Click above and scroll down to watch the video While perhaps not as spectacular as San Francisco getting a fancy Smartlet charging station in front of City Hall , the addition of two charging posts at Truckee Meadows Community College in Northern Nevada are a welcome addition to the nations slowly-growing charging infrastructure. The posts, which use a traditional parking meter interface and ask for only 10 cents an hour, are getting put to good use, as we learned from a bit of video by the local NBC affiliate, KRNV. As interesting as the posts were, the station found one of the vehicles regularly using them was just as interesting: a 1991 GMC Van. Around the time GM was refining the Impact prototype that would go on to become the EV1 , some GMC vans were built with an electric drivetrain for the Department of Defense, according to the vehicle’s owner (Southern California Edison got some too). Able to go 70 miles on a charge, the vehicle requires little maintenance and its driver seems very happy with his old EV ride. If you are thinking that you’d like a van like this yourself, you may be in luck. A nice looking 1989 copy is listed on the EV Album by someone who says, “I’m considering selling this, contact me with offer.” If that doesn’t pan out and you’re good with a wrench, there’s another in need of extreme TLC on eBay for the next few days. Porsche releases details on the upcoming Cayenne S hybrid
Click the Cayenne hybrid for a high res gallery Porsche has just released more information on the new Cayenne S Hybrid that will finally launch in 2010. The company has changed up its powertrain plans since originally announcing the hybrid. Instead of the older 3.6L normally aspirated V6, it will now use the new supercharged and direct injected 3.0L found in the new Audi S4 and A6. The 333 hp V6 is paired up with a 52 hp electric motor sandwiched between the engine and 8-speed automatic transmission. The combination of the engine, motor and nickel metal hydride battery can propel the Cayenne to 62 mph in 6.8 seconds. The 154 lb battery pack occupies the spare tire well. As a strong hybrid system, the Cayenne can operate in electric, internal combustion or blended modes. The motor and battery have enough power output to allow the SUV to run on electricity at speeds up to 82 mph when cruising on level ground. The hybrid motor also replaces the conventional alternator further reducing parasitic losses in the system. Porsche expects the hybrid Cayenne to top 26 mpg (U.S.) on the NEDC combined drive cycle, slightly better than the 25.3 achieved by the new diesel. KTM may introduce new green vehicle in Geneva
Click above for a gallery of the KTM X-Bow KTM made major headlines when it first announced it was entering the four-wheeled market back in 2007 with the X-Bow roadster. Since then, the Austrian manufacturer, more commonly associated with race-ready two-wheeled machinery, has announced its intentions to further probe the alternative transportation category with a range of three- and four-wheeled vehicles. Next month at the Geneva Motor Show , KTM is expected to debut two completely new vehicles alongside two new versions of the X-Bow. We know that the newly-formed automaker has plans to enter the electric vehicle world, likely with both a motorcycle and an automobile of sorts. So far, KTM has managed to keep its specific plans for Geneva mostly under wraps, but we’ve heard talk of a possible city car that could have been developed along with India’s Bajaj and an eco-friendly electric off-road vehicle. One of the two new X-Bow models may come with a closed roof, leaving room for an even more powerful racing edition of the little sportscar. Gordon Murray’s new T.25 illustrated with slew of little toys
Click above for a gallery of pint-sized T.25 toys According to Gordon Murray, the upcoming city car that his design firm has been working on will be half the size of an average car while maintaining at least a 4-star safety rating in Euro NCAP testing. How small is that? Two T.25′s will fit in a single lane while driving and 3 will fit in a standard-sized parallel parking spot. Really small. Murray also promises that there will be 6 different layouts for his little multi-purpose vehicle, all of which will share the same basic underpinnings. That small size has plenty of desirable effects, such as cutting carbon emissions and fuel consumption in half and cutting the amount of raw materials necessary for its construction in half. Further, much less energy will be required to assemble the vehicle or ship it to its final destination. Where possible, recycled components will be used. It may be hard to imagine the impact that the vehicle’s size and construction will have, so the hopeful automaker has released a bunch of images demonstrating the superiority of the T.25′s design… using little toys. The T.25 will also be adept at avoiding giant snakes , apparently. See our gallery below. Leaked sketches reveal entire Opel Ampera look thanks to OAMI
Click above for a gallery of the Opel Ampera We got our first teaser look at the production version of the European Chevy Volt, aka the Opel Ampera , in late January. Now, thanks to the regulatory database run by the Office for Harmonization of the Internal Market ( OHIM ), the official European Union agency responsible for registering trademarks and designs for EU companies, we can get a much better idea of what the Ampera will look like. Short version: a Volt with the parenthesis headlights of the Flextreme concept. We don’t expect big surprises with the underlying Voltec technology . Our friends at Autoblog en Epanol have a nice pictorial spCar Blog Greenshowing the differences and similarities between the Ampera and the Volt. You’ll be able to understand everything without knowing one lick of Spanish (Car Blog Greenthe post in Google-translated English here ). We’ll see the Ampera for ourselves – and bring you live pics – once we get to Geneva in early March. Until then, check out the Ampera in the gallery below. 2008 Hybrid sales follow every other segment, down 9.9% in 2008
Auto Blog: Hybrid As gas prices rose steadily through the first eight months of 2008, hybrid-powered vehicles disappeared from dealer lots pretty much as fast most manufacturers could build and deliver them. However, once Labor Day hit, Toyota, Nissan and Ford hybrids were no more immune than any other vehicle type to the market realities. Priuses, Escapes, Civics and others all sat stagnant as loans became increasingly difficult to get and people feared for their jobs. By year’s end, the only car makers to see an overall increase in hybrid sales were General Motors and Nissan. GM added general availability of the Tahoe and Yukon two-modes as well as the new Vue and Malibu mild hybrids. That resulted in a 179 percent increase, while Nissan Altima hybrids climbed 5.1 percent. Ford’s Escape/Mariner hybrids dropped 22 percent, Honda’s Civic dropped 12.5 percent and Toyota’s array of hybrids dropped a similar amount. Chrysler sold a total of 81 Durango and Aspen hybrids. Shelby Super Cars revises incredible claims, still incredible
Auto Blog: Emerging Technologies , EV/Plug-in , USA In an effort to maintain a modicum of credibility after suffering from what they now say was a “premature release” of inaccurate information, Shelby Super Cars (SSC) has published a revised version of its recent communiqué regarding their electric vehicle program . The unbelievable claim of being able to recharge their Ultimate Aero EV in ten minutes from an ordinary 110V outlet has now been amended to “…SSC’s “Charge on the Run[TM]” onboard charging system allows for 10 minute full battery recharges on a 220V service.” That’s much better. Still not imaginable, but much better. SSC is aware of the misgivings out there and will attempt to transform that doubt into a huge publicity opportunity with a demonstration of their All-Electric Scalable Powertrain (AESP) technology at one of America’s superspeedways following the official debut of the car. Company owner Jerod Shelby and some “notable” drivers will complete high-speed laps punctuated by 10 minute battery-recharging pitstops. If they successfully pull this off, we look forward to eating some of the most delicious humble pie ever known to man. Hit the jump to Car Blog Greenall the reformulated claims and future green car plans. Lexus moves the IS 220d’s CO emission levels down a notch
Auto Blog: Diesel , Lexus , UK From 163 g/km last year to 148g/km now, Lexus has upgraded the green credentials of the IS 220d. This vehicle is now more fuel efficient, which makes it all the more interesting for fleet purchasers in the United Kingdom. First of all, the VED (Vehicle Excise Duty) for the car drops to band C, which only saves you £25 per year, but can save more money thanks to lower Benefit-in-Kind company car tax rates and the allowance companies can write down against the Corporation Tax. The IS 220d’s fuel economy goes from 46.3 to 50.4 mpg Imperial (38.5 mpg U.S. or 6.1 l/km to 42 mpg U.S. or 5.6 l/100 km). How? Well, IS isn’t a simple econobox; it comes with a diesel 2.2-liter I4 that, mated to a manual 6-speed manual, produces 175hp at 3,600rpm and 400Nm of torque (295 lb/ft), going to 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in 8.9 seconds. Prices starts at £22,015. Full press release after the jump. Plug In America’s Inaugural Parade West: 74 plug-in vehicles, lots of pictures
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Green Culture , Green Daily Click on the image above for a gallery of images from the parade With today’s inauguration of President Obama now in the history books, here’s how over seventy electric vehicles were used to celebrate the event with a short parade through Santa Monica , California over the weekend. Plug In America organized the event and sent us these pictures of the vehicles and people who came together to promote a plug-in vehicle focus in the next administration. 74 vehicles ( more than expected ) were part of the parade, and plug-in proponents Chris Paine, the director of “Who Killed the Electric Car?”; Ed Kjaer, the director of electric transportation for SoCal Edison; and California State Senator Fran Pavley were among the speakers who kicked off the event. There is a complete list of EVs, PHEVs, and converted vehicles that took part in the parade after the jump, but the workhorses of the movement were the 40 (!) Toyota RAV4 EVs that participated. Imagine how many EV1s could have been there if GM hadn’t crushed them. There are two first-hand accounts of the event here and here . Indiana Mayor Defends City Purchase of Hummer
“The word Hummer really throws people off, makes you think you’re driving a big automobile. I’m not driving one of those. They’re gas-guzzlers.” Rudy Clay Mayor of Gary, Ind. Rudy Clay, Mayor of Gary Indiana, is defending his decision to purchase a new $30,000 2009 Hummer H3 at city expense—while the City of Gary faces a $30 million budget deficit. Clay got into hot water last year for using the Hummer H3 for his professional and personal use, during a time when gas prices reached record highs. The Hummer H3 is rated at 14 miles to the gallon in the city and 18 mpg on the high. In 2008, Clay was using city funds to pay for gasoline but pledged to begin fueling the vehicle with his own money. On Wednesday, he reiterated his commitment to pay for his own gas.
