Hybrid Car Future Hinges on Bolivia’s Lithium

The next generation of hybrid and electric cars depends on lithium ion batteries—but the world’s biggest supply of lithium is controlled by a socialist country with no great love for the United States. Evo Morales hopes Bolivia’s lithium reserves will allow it to join an exclusive club of countries like Venezuela and Saudi Arabia, whose natural resources make them indispensable to the global energy future. When representatives from the Obama administration visited the Washington Auto Show yesterday, their message was clear: The President hopes to make the United States a major player in lithium ion battery technology and manufacturing. Backing up their words is $2 billion of stimulus money that the administration wants to dedicate to the development of advanced batteries for fuel-efficient cars. Lithium ion batteries—which can pack more energy and power with less weight and space—are seen as the key to the next generation of hybrid and electric cars. And those battery-powered vehicles, in turn, are seen as the key to reducing American’s dependence on foreign oil and reducing carbon emissions from vehicles. As global car companies and battery makers scramble to take the lead on this technology, there’s a question of where the lithium carbonate that makes these batteries possible will come from , and at what cost. That may dictate whether or not hybrids and EVs ever become more than niche products. Bolivia says it hopes to one day be the world’s leading producer of lithium, and with at least 73 million metric tons waiting to be mined, the country is positioned to follow through. Representatives from Toyota, Mitsubishi, Sumitomo, and Bollore —a French electric car maker—have all contacted the Bolivian government in the hopes of hammering out agreements to buy the raw material. California gas stations choose to close instead of buying vapor-reducing pumps

Auto Blog: Etc. , Legislation and Policy , Green Daily Photo by ellievanhoutte . Licensed under Creative Commons license 2.0 . This April, a mandate from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) called the Enhanced Vapor Recovery Program (EVRP) will go into effect. The idea behind the program is to get next-generation clean nozzles and equipment installed at fuel pumps in the state in order to control emissions. Sounds like a good thing, right? The environment wins becasue ground-level ozone should be reduced and people win , too. What’s the problem? These new cleaner gas stations aren’t cheap, and “dozens, and potentially hundreds” of gas stations in California might close down instead to upgrade. In other words, in this case, going green means going out of business. According to the Pasadena Star-News , the South Coast Air Quality Management District has heard from 76 refueling sites (of about 4,500 total in its area) that will shut down because of the high costs of the EVRP. CARB responds by saying that gas prices will go up by about 0.68 cents a gallon to cover the cost of upgrading. Vectrix to debut VX-2 and VX-1E on Friday

Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , On Two Wheels , Vectrix Click above for more shots of the Vectrix maxiscooter We’ve been anticipating the release of a few new soots from Vectrix, the only current manufacturer of electric maxiscooters. The flagship model has been named VX-1 and two new models are set to be debuted at the motorcycle show in New York, which starts today. The next electric machine down the line is known as the VX-1E and is based on the same platform and drivetrain as its larger brother. The difference? We’re a bit fuzzy on that, but Vectrix says that it will have a bit less top speed and acceleration. More when we get it. The lowest model on the chain is the VX-2, which is supposed to offer similar performance to a standard 50cc gas-powered scooter. In other words, expect a top speed of around 30 miles per hour and the ability to accelerate a bit quicker than a typical economy car. Range on the VX-2 is said to be 45-50 miles and the price will be $5,195. Audi A3 TDI Is Bound for US

Audi announced at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show that its 2010 A3 2.0 TDI will be coming to the US early next year. The diesel hatchback, which participated in the Audi Mileage Marathon last fall, averaged more than 45 miles per gallon over the course of the 4,000-mile journey. The A3 is considered one of Europe’s cleanest and most fuel-efficient passenger cars. The 2010 A3 is not expected to bring big changes from the 2009 model. It will continue to draw power from the same advanced clean diesel powertrain as last year’s model. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine will yield 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. Expect superb off-the-line performance and acceleration from the engine—which is mated with a six-speed automatic transmission. Fighting Words Audi considers the A3 a hybrid-fighter, specifically putting the Toyota Prius and the 2010 Honda Insight in its sights. The car is perhaps better compared with the Mini Cooper and Volvo C30 in the sport compact luxury segment. The price of diesel, which remains higher than premium unleaded gasoline, may be a potential downside for consumers. But that deterrent is counter-balanced by great fuel economy, strong performance, a plush ride, and a cabin with loads of high-end upgrades and amenities. Pricing for the 2010 A3 will be announced later this year. read more
