Geneva 2009: Ford’s next Focus, the iosis Max now with EcoBoost!
Click above for a high-res gallery of the Ford iosis Max Concept Ford is preparing to make a major shift to smaller cars over the next few years, starting with the new Fiesta at the end of this year and the new European-based Focus next year. When that next-generation Focus lands in the U.S., it is expected to look a lot like the concept that Ford is showing in Geneva this week. The shape and styling details of the iosis Max give a preview of next years Focus five door hatch although the head-light clusters and doors will surely be more conventional. The sliding rear doors are unlikely to make it to production either. What will make it through is the drivetrain. This is the third Ford concept this year (along with the Lincoln Concept C and Volvo S60 concepts in Detroit) powered by the new 1.6L EcoBoost four cylinder along with the PowerShift dual clutch transmission. With the automatic start stop system, this combination is expected to top 40 mpg with ease when it arrives. Toyota announces 150 plug-in Prius hybrids are coming to Europe in 2009
Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2010 Toyota Prius Toyota Motor Europe CEO Tadashi Arashima has announced that Europe will get 150 plug-in Priuses this year, followed by another 350 in 2010. These PHEV units will be used for testing purposes and will not be available for the masses. Even better news from ToMoCo: 2012 will see the introduction of an all-electric vehicle. Toyota could use the plug-in help to meet its self-set goal of average corporate CO 2 emissions of 140 g/km, including Lexus offerings, this year and drop to between 120 and 130 g/km before the mandatory limit comes dues in 2015 . Arashima also said that, since the price of diesel cars will climb significantly with the introduction of the Euro V and VI anti-pollution rules, diesel vehicles won’t be as attractive to buyers who might also consider a hybrid vehicle. He did acknowledge that diesels will continue to be significant in European markets. Geneva 2009: Honda Accord Tourer Type-S
Click the Accord tourer for a high res gallery The car pictured above represents some of my favorite features in a main-stream car: it’s a wagon and it’s a diesel. I’m also fully aware that I am in a distinct minority on both counts among drivers in the U.S. market. This is the new European-market Honda Accord Tourer Type-S. We get the sedan version in the U.S., badged as the Acura TSX. Personally, I prefer the wagon version because it retains the overall size and dynamic characteristics of a sedan while adding a huge dollop of utility when needed. It’s also quite a handsome car. Rumor has it we’ll see this body style appear as a new Honda CUV in the states this fall with the high-riding Outback treatment. The wagon is not new to Europe but the new Type-S (also available as a sedan) is. The Type-S Accord gets a 178 hp version of Honda’s new iDTEC 2.2L diesel four cylinder with a stiff 280 lb-ft of torque. The Type-S gets larger 18″ wheels and bumper and sill extensions for a more aggressive look. Unfortunately, this is very likely the car we were supposed to get as a TSX this year. However, market conditions have forced Honda to indefinitely cancel those plans. What a shame. Gallery: Geneva 2009: Honda Accord Tourer Type-S Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc. Chevy and Clean Diesels Hit Greenest Car List
The Honda Civic GX, a vehicle that runs on compressed natural gas , was named last week as the greenest car of the year by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE). The Toyota Prius and Honda Civic Hybrid claimed spots two and three in ACEEE’s annual environmental rankings—the Green Book Online —followed by the Smart ForTwo, Toyota Yaris and Nissan Altima Hybrid. Top: Honda Civic GX Bottom: Drivers of the Civic GX fuel up with compressed natural gas rather than gasoline. This is the twelfth year that ACEEE produced the Green Book Online, which assigns vehicles a single “green” score based on tailpipe emissions, fuel consumption, greenhouse-gas emissions, and a cradle-to-grave lifecycle analysis. The most dramatic trend this year was the emergence of two Chevy cars on the top ten list—and the introduction of clean diesel vehicles. We spoke with Shruti Vaidynanathan, primary analyst for Green Book Online, about these trends. HybridCars.com: The Honda Civic GX was once again named greenest car of the year. Yet, the vehicle sells in very low quantities and most consumers don’t have access to CNG. Do sales numbers matter in the overall green car equation? read more

Tanfield American spinoff to begin building trucks this year
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , USA Click on the Smith Newton for a hi-res gallery After scuttling an earlier plan to build trucks in the U.S. , a new Tanfield Group announcement reverses that reversal. The company has just incorporated Smith Electric Vehicles (SEV) US Corp. and expects them to begin building copies of the Newton (above) in the U.S. sometime this year. In a shrewd move, Tanfield will hold 49 per cent of the company, thereby allowing the new U.S. majority-owned entity to qualify for government funding and other benefits. Before it can begin building vehicles for the American customers that it is already in discussions with, it will have to have a plant. SEV US has received “firm expressions” from two States already and a site is expected to be announced soon. The Smith Newton is based on the Avia truck chassis and is the equivalent of U.S. Class 5 and 6 medium duty trucks. Though not stated, we expect that the trucks will be powered by lithium iron phosphate (LiFePo4) batteries from Valence Technologies of Austin, Texas. Official announcement to investors after the break. Coming: Cheap Chinese Cars at Costco?
Chinese cars have been displayed at the Detroit Auto Show for the past several years. Many industry critics ridiculed them for design or quality flaws. But others see these first Chinese vehicles and remember how Japanese and Korean cars were once laughed off—only to become mainstream products in America. Kathleen Ligocki, CEO of GS Motors and formerly president of Ford of Mexico, expects Chinese-designed cars to begin production in Mexico in 2010—and make their way to the US about five years after first testing the waters in Latin America and Canada. GS Motors, a Mexican company, already imports three models from China’s First Auto Works (FAW) and sold 4,000 of them in Mexico last year. Here’s the zinger: Ligocki believes Chinese cars will be sold in the US through big-box stores like Costco or Wal-Mart, which is how GS Motors is retailing them in Mexico. GS is building an assembly plant in Michoacan, Mexico with FAW. The plan is for vehicles to roll off the line beginning in 2010. GS Motors will launch the FAW brand in Mexico this year with the F1 Hatchback, an entry-level car sold for under $5,500. FAW, one of the largest Chinese automakers, is allied in China with Volkswagen. FAW also produces the Miles ZX40, a small van-style neighborhood electric vehicle, developed by Miles Electric Vehicles , based on Santa Monica, Calif. GS Motors is racing to bring the first Chinese cars to America via Mexico—but they are not alone. BYD (Build Your Dreams) showed plug-in hybrid and electric model in Detroit last month and promised to bring them to the US as early as next year. In fact, many of China’s 80 or so auto companies have made similar gestures, with varying degrees of seriousness. read more

Chevrolet Mini (aka Spark) to launch production in India this year
Auto Blog: Chevrolet , Asia The tiny subcompact that GM first showed as the 2007 Beat concept could start production by the end of this year in India. A report in Indian Autos Blog indicates that for the Indian market the car will be called the Mini – rather than the Spark moniker it will have when it comes to the U.S. in two years. GM’s initial plan had been to the build the Mini at it’s factory in Maharashtra from complete knock down kits brought in from another country (likely China or Korea). Instead, GM is tooling up for full Indian production. The Mini is expected to compete in the premium small car segment against the likes of the Hyundai i20 and Škoda Fabia. Power is expected to come from a 1.2L gas or 1.4L diesel engine. We still don’t know where the U.S. market Spark will be sourced from. VW Touareg TDIs finish 1-2 in Dakar Rally
Auto Blog: Diesel , Volkswagen Two of the five of Volkswagen Race Touareg TDIs that ran in this year’s Dakar Rally took top overall positions in the two marathon. The truck driven Giniel de Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz led to the finish capturing the first ever overall win for a diesel powered vehicle in this race. The Race Touaregs were powered by 2.5L five cylinder diesel engine that is basically half of the V10 TDI formerly used in the production Touareg. In race trim this engine produces 280 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. This year the Dakar was moved from north Africa to South America. The 9,000 km route ran from Buenos Aires Argentina to the Pacific coast in Chile and back again. Temperatures along the route ranged from 104°F to below 32°F. Elon Musk discusses the state of affairs at Tesla
Auto Blog: EV/Plug-in , Tesla Motors Tesla Motors may well build the most desirable electric car of all time, but that doesn’t make the company immune the same economic realities as every other automaker. Last week, Tesla CEO delivered a keynote address at the Society of Automotive Analysts “Outlook 2009″ conference that took place during the press previews for the Detroit Auto Show . In the last few months, Tesla has had to abandon plans for a public stock offering as well as an additional private fund raising round. Before the speech, Musk sat down to talk at some length about the current state of the business. He did acknowledge that new orders have slowed down recently while some existing orders have been canceled. Musk declined to be specific about numbers but did acknowledge that the overall economic environment has affected some customer’s ability to complete their orders. Musk also discussed the battery supply deal with Daimler and indicated that he would like to see more OEM deals in the future. The bottom line is that even with the added revenue from increased Roadster deliveries and option price increases, Tesla is likely to have a very difficult time going forward unless the economy makes a dramatic turnaround in the next six months.
